This Blows

So if you haven't been to the coast lately, you might not have heard about the latest trend in salons. Blowout Dry Bars are popping up everywhere. What a blowout dry bar is is a salon that doesn't cut, color or do anything but shampoo and blow dry hair. Salons offer different options like a loose beach look, big volume or sleek and straight.

The Millionaire Matchmaker herself, Patti Stanger suggests a blowout as the perfect pre-date way to get yourself feeling gorgeous, sexy and feminine. She suggests getting one done whenever you need a pick-me-up. And at $35 in Los Angeles, that's way cheaper than botox.

Blowing out one's hair is the equivalent to making yourself a sandwich, good but not quite as good as when someone else does it for you.

I'm considering adding blowouts to my menu and packaging them with chemistry shots. A shot and a blow at one low price! But I wonder how many people would take advantage of this great service for a night out or just popping in on a bad hair day.

remember when we knew nothing and did it anyways?

So I made mention in another post of the time when my friend Kate and I decided to color my hair with box color.  okay so that was a mistake.  However lots of people that have been through school to do hair still don't have the natural talent for it.  SO in April I was in serious need of a color and in serious lack of stylist so I did the only thing I knew to do... I called Kate.  I think she was secretly a little excited to try her hand at coloring again. So this time armed with professional color and professional ideas we set out to do my hair.  I sectioned it out myself and told her what to do.  Lucky for us we were working with deposit only color which means no lifting involved so that gives you a minimal chance of creating that same brassy tabby cat orange color we came up with the first time. *process at room temp for 20 mins* BOOM. Done.  We did this in the beginning of April and as you probably already know as a stylist I like to keep people on their toes and change my look up every 3-4 weeks but there is something about THIS color concoction that I just can't ditch.  Well done Kate.  I feel accomplishment...and fear for my job :)

Hot New Trend: hair feathers

At a recent photo shoot, I had the opportunity to play with hair feathers. My good friend and client, Lindsey, had hair feathers that closely match her high-fashion red that we've been cultivating. I was surprised at how much fun they were to style. I was actually able to curl the feathers in with her natural hair.

After some research, I have decided to start offering them as a service at the salon. In addition to these feathers, I'll also be offering hair tinsel which can also be style right along with your hair. You can wash, blow dry and flat iron these hair accessories. They come in lots of color varieties. I'm looking forward to my shipment coming in.

Workin it back

At the salon up to my usual tricks i suppose.  I'm currently working on a color correction.  For anyone who doesn't know this is quite the process.  In this case I'm taking my subject from a very dark Red violet Brown and trying to make her into a cool beige blonde.  I'm using a product that I have never used before so it's exciting for me to see it working.  In this process the chemicals are working to shrink the color molecules then when I go to shampoo her out it will physically pull as many of those molecules out of the hair as possible.  It works because the cuticle layer of the hair is open at this point.  Once you remove the pigment you will likely have to recolor most of the time you won't be lucky enough for the color to lift evenly and much less to a pretty tone. ANYWAY, color correction is probably one of the hardest things to do.  Let me share a story here  When I was in 10th Grade my best friend Kate and I decided we should color my hair.  Being young and stupid and having no concept of the science of color used a beautiful "mahogany brown"  now since we were coloring on virgin hair it worked out fine.  Fastforward to 10 weeks later.  My ashy roots were growing out and I decided having colored hair was fun but I didn't want to keep coloring it ( for the record I haven't stopped coloring it since then) So Kate and I ran into wal-greens and grabbed a color remover.  We got home threw it on my head and when it was done we were horrified to find that it had mutated into a lovely shade of tabby cat orange... the next day was Thanksgiving needless to say I wore a hat ALL DAY... My dad took me to my hair lady the next day and 3 hours and $120 later I was lookin like Gwen Stefani.   Point on my story is at that moment I decided it was best to leave it to the professionals.

BACK to the moment.  We took off the color remover. I was shocked.  This girl went from the darkest of browns to a dark blonde honey beige.  That just left us to tone her down to a COOL blonde and then we will seal her off with a chemisrty shot and have one happy little cheeto!!!

Welcome to My Blog

I am embarking on becoming a business owner. Since graduating form the The College of Hair Design, I have worked for other people never truly reaping the rewards of my hard work and ingenuity.  Starting last week, I began renting a chair for the first time at Estella Salon.

The challenge isn't in doing the work I love, it's in sharing it with the world. That's why I've started blogging about my experience. This is a place where I'll share what I've been up to and where you can see my latest work.
